Al-Mutaffifin

The Defrauding

36 verses Makkah

بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

1

وَيۡلٌ لِّلۡمُطَفِّفِيۡنَۙ‏

Woe to those who give less [than due],1

2

الَّذِيۡنَ اِذَا اكۡتَالُوۡا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسۡتَوۡفُوۡنَۖ‏

Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.

3

وَاِذَا كَالُوۡهُمۡ اَوْ وَّزَنُوۡهُمۡ يُخۡسِرُوۡنَؕ‏

But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.

4

اَلَا يَظُنُّ اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ اَنَّهُمۡ مَّبۡعُوۡثُوۡنَۙ‏

Do they not think that they will be resurrected

5

لِيَوۡمٍ عَظِيۡمٍۙ‏

For a tremendous Day -

6

يَّوۡمَ يَقُوۡمُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَؕ‏

The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?

7

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّ كِتٰبَ الۡفُجَّارِ لَفِىۡ سِجِّيۡنٍؕ‏

No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.

8

وَمَاۤ اَدۡرٰٮكَ مَا سِجِّيۡنٌؕ‏

And what can make you know what is sijjeen?

9

كِتٰبٌ مَّرۡقُوۡمٌؕ‏

It is [their destination1 recorded in] a register inscribed.

10

وَيۡلٌ يَّوۡمَٮِٕذٍ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِيۡنَۙ‏

Woe, that Day, to the deniers,

11

الَّذِيۡنَ يُكَذِّبُوۡنَ بِيَوۡمِ الدِّيۡنِؕ‏

Who deny the Day of Recompense.

12

وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهٖۤ اِلَّا كُلُّ مُعۡتَدٍ اَثِيۡمٍۙ‏

And none deny it except every sinful transgressor.

13

اِذَا تُتۡلٰى عَلَيۡهِ اٰيٰتُنَا قَالَ اَسَاطِيۡرُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَؕ‏

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

14

كَلَّا​ بَلۡ رَانَ عَلٰى قُلُوۡبِهِمۡ مَّا كَانُوۡا يَكۡسِبُوۡنَ‏

No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.1

15

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّهُمۡ عَنۡ رَّبِّهِمۡ يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ لَّمَحۡجُوۡبُوۡنَ​ؕ‏

No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.1

16

ثُمَّ اِنَّهُمۡ لَصَالُوا الۡجَحِيۡمِؕ‏

Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.

17

ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هٰذَا الَّذِىۡ كُنۡتُمۡ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوۡنَؕ‏

Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."

18

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّ كِتٰبَ الۡاَبۡرَارِ لَفِىۡ عِلِّيِّيۡنَؕ‏

No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in ʿilliyyūn.

19

وَمَاۤ اَدۡرٰٮكَ مَا عِلِّيُّوۡنَؕ‏

And what can make you know what is ʿilliyyūn?

20

كِتٰبٌ مَّرۡقُوۡمٌۙ‏

It is [their destination1 recorded in] a register inscribed

21

يَّشۡهَدُهُ الۡمُقَرَّبُوۡنَؕ‏

Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allāh].

22

اِنَّ الۡاَبۡرَارَ لَفِىۡ نَعِيۡمٍۙ‏

Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure

23

عَلَى الۡاَرَآٮِٕكِ يَنۡظُرُوۡنَۙ‏

On adorned couches, observing.

24

تَعۡرِفُ فِىۡ وُجُوۡهِهِمۡ نَضۡرَةَ النَّعِيۡمِ​ۚ‏

You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.

25

يُسۡقَوۡنَ مِنۡ رَّحِيۡقٍ مَّخۡتُوۡمٍۙ‏

They will be given to drink [pure] wine1 [which was] sealed.

26

خِتٰمُهٗ مِسۡكٌ ​ؕ وَفِىۡ ذٰلِكَ فَلۡيَتَنَافَسِ الۡمُتَنــَافِسُوۡنَؕ‏

The last of it1 is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.

27

وَ مِزَاجُهٗ مِنۡ تَسۡنِيۡمٍۙ‏

And its mixture is of Tasneem,1

28

عَيۡنًا يَّشۡرَبُ بِهَا الۡمُقَرَّبُوۡنَؕ‏

A spring from which those near [to Allāh] drink.

29

اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ اَجۡرَمُوۡا كَانُوۡا مِنَ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا يَضۡحَكُوۡنَ  ۖ‏

Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.

30

وَاِذَا مَرُّوۡا بِهِمۡ يَتَغَامَزُوۡنَ  ۖ‏

And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.

31

وَاِذَا انۡقَلَبُوۡۤا اِلٰٓى اَهۡلِهِمُ انْقَلَبُوۡا فَكِهِيۡنَ  ۖ‏

And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.

32

وَاِذَا رَاَوۡهُمۡ قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ لَـضَآلُّوۡنَۙ‏

And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."

33

وَمَاۤ اُرۡسِلُوۡا عَلَيۡهِمۡ حٰفِظِيۡنَۙ‏

But they had not been sent as guardians over them.

34

فَالۡيَوۡمَ الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا مِنَ الۡكُفَّارِ يَضۡحَكُوۡنَۙ‏

So Today1 those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,

35

عَلَى الۡاَرَآٮِٕكِۙ يَنۡظُرُوۡنَؕ‏

On adorned couches, observing.

36

هَلۡ ثُوِّبَ الۡكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوۡا يَفۡعَلُوۡنَ‏

Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?
